The Elements of Nature
Even before the times of God & religion, ancient cultures believed in the power of nature. They bowed down to and paid homage to the elements. They feared and were fascinated by the mysterious forces of nature, the five elements; Earth, Water, Fire, Air and aether or space. This theme has fascinated me for a long time, and I keep returning to it from time to time. I initially attempted to depict all five elements on a single canvas but did not succeed. This problem was inadvertently solved when I was asked to make a series of four paintings for a restricted space in a residence. Maybe each element warranted its own canvas. Fire will simply never share space with Water ( pun intended.) The challenge now was to try and paint four completely different things that would inhabit space and trying to make a harmonious series of works.  I believe that I tackled that by creating a movement that carries the viewer through the four pieces.

These are depictions of the elements in a collage form. The paintings consist of small pieces of acrylic painted canvas, that were later pasted on a stretched canvas.

The paintings work as a diptych or as individual pieces.
